Matthew 5:14-16 says:
14 “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.
Notice that it says “you are the light of the world” not “you will become the light of the world”! As Christians we are the light of the world. That is one of our tasks as followers of Christ. It is not an assumption nor is it an option it is a directive from our Commanding Officer – Jesus Christ to whom we swear our full allegiance! So if you’re not being a light in the world… in the darkness, then you had better be because this is what God requires of you as a born again Christian!
Are we being a light to the world around us? Are we truly?
We must not hide our light. It must be visible. It must be seen. It must shine forth and radiate brightly! We must not be timid. We must not be afraid! We must stick out as though we were a city on top of a hill!
When we allow our light or testimony to shine in front of the world – the unbelieving – they will notice and ultimately God will receive the glory! We will be able to make a lasting IMPACT for Christ!
So how do we become lights in the darkness?
- We must stand up and fight for truth even when our society is in decay
- We must make an impact on the world around us and that starts with the small everyday things e.g. in the way you talk, the way you dress, the way you do things, your attitude etc.
- We must be readily able to share and defend our faith and hope in our Christ (see my article called Can You Defend Your Hope In Christ?)
May our lights shine before men so that they may see our good works and ultimately glorify our Heavenly Father!
