It is only too often that we find ourselves caught up in this whirlwind of life being carried away with trivial matters on this earth that do not any significance or value when put into the perspective of eternity.
Colossians 3:1-4 says: “If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. 2 Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. 3 For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
The things of this life fade, they pass away like the leaves picked up and carried away by the autumn wind. Notice that verse one says “if then you were raised with Christ?” This is referring to those of us who identify as followers of Christ. As God’s children our focus is on heavenly matters, not the temporal pleasures of this life – that is what separates us from the rest of the world. This is part of the ongoing, daily sanctification process in the life of the Christian.
This is not to say that we do not enjoy life, however our constant focus and outlook on life should be on that which is eternal. We must always ask ourselves: “is what I am doing playing a part in God’s greater plan for humanity and eternity?”
This command encompasses our entire lives – our aspirations, hopes and futures. We are on this earth for a purpose and in a broad sense that is to glorify God. There’s no time to muck around wasting time on pursuits that serve only to gratify our carnal natures.
Are you setting your thoughts on heavenly things? Or … are you distracted with temporal trivialities?
