Matthew 6:19-21 (KJV)
19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:
20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:
21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
I was contemplating over this passage of Scripture a couple of nights ago and it really stood out to me. So I thought I would write something about it.
Where your treasure is, that is where your heart is. So my question to you is “where is your treasure?”
Is your treasure in your career? Your car? Your money? Your games and gadgets? Your hobbies? Your collections? Or is it in heaven?
Is your heart set on doing the work of Christ our Master or is it set on doing things that waste time and have little value?
You see, the things of this earth are temporal and easily susceptible to damage. They fade, they break, rust damages them, moths eat them, thieves steal them and the list could go on and on. Put simply, they do not last forever.
Therefore as Christians we are commanded to lay up our treasure… eternal treasure that has value… in Heaven where these things do not perish or get damaged.
Whatever you do in life, you have to think about whether it brings glory to God and furthers His Kingdom because after all, your allegiance and responsibility is to Christ and Him alone. Your time is not your time. Your money is not your money. Your possessions are not your possessions. They are all Christ’s.
This is not to say that we can’t have earthly possessions but the thing is that our focus should not be on them but rather on heavenly things.
We need to do what truly counts in the eternal scheme of things. We need to do things for the glory and edification of Jesus Christ and for the advancement of His Kingdom. Being a faithful ambassador of Christ means that we will not see our rewards on this earth but our rewards will be in Heaven.
Mark 8:36 says “For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?” The answer? Absolutely nothing!
Remember, as Christians our citizenship is in Heaven not on this earth (Phil 3:20).
Do you talk about things of the Lord without hesitation? Are your pursuing activities that further the glorious Gospel of Jesus Christ? Are you faithfully proclaiming His word? Are you being a bold witness for Him? Are you denying self and taking up your cross daily Are you witnessing to others and being a good example through your life? All of these have eternal value and produce great reward for those who are faithful in doing them.
Let us be faithful servants for our Master!
Grace and peace,
